Mike Weir's drought is over. Of course, that is if you don't really count his win over Tiger Woods in the Sunday singles matches at last month's Presidents Cup.
Weir shot a 2-under 68 on Sunday to win the PGA Tour's Fry's Electronics Open at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona by one stroke over Australia's Mark Hensby. For Weir, winner of the 2003 Masters, it was his first win since 2004. "It's been a long time coming," Weir said. "I hit the ball really solidly today. I think that was the best I hit it probably all week as far as in the middle of the face."
Weir ended up at 14-under for the championship for his eighth PGA Tour win, and first since the 2004 Nissan Open.
It took a 6-foot par putt on No. 18 to secure the win (Weir had hit an errant approach into the greenside bunker on 18).
Weir and Hensby battled for most of the day. It was on the par-4 15th that the tide finally swung in Weir's favor, when he stuck a chip shot to 1 foot to make birdie to take the lead.
Carl Pettersson, who led the tournament after three rounds, finished with a 75 and tied for fourth with Sean O'Hair at 9-under.
Wind was a huge factor in Sunday play. Gusts reached 25 mph, which roiled up the desert dust on Grayhawk's Raptor course.
"Obviously it was a difficult day, with the wind," said Weir.
Hensby had his opportunities against Weir. On No. 17, Weir hit an errant second shot to a slope left of the green. But Hensby could not capitalize on the mistake; he also hit his second shot past the green and had to settle for a par.
When Weir reached the greenside bunker on 18, Hensby could have taken advantage. Instead, his approach landed on an embankment and barely missed the lateral water hazard. He had to convert a difficult up-and-down to save par.
Billy Mayfair, a resident of Scottsdale, finished third at 10-under for the championship.
